Wayne Griffin

Funeral service for Wayne Griffin is scheduled for Saturday, July 14 at 10:00 AM at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, TX. Burial will follow in the Blue Springs Cemetery in Etoile, TX. Visitation is from 5-8 PM on Friday, July 13, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home.

Wayne was born on December 10, 1955 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Betty Lee and John Griffin, and died Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at home, surrounded by family.

Wayne grew up in Nacogdoches and graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1974.

Wayne was a logging contractor for 37 years. A third generation logger, he was in the woods pulling a pulpwood hook by the age of 9.

Wayne was honored to work alongside his family, and, though known to throw his hat a time or two, valued the many men that made up a crew that could haul some logs. Wayne was proud of those big yellow trucks.

Wayne was voted Chapter 2 Logger of the Year in 2005, on the Texas Forestry Association Board of Directors, and past Chairman of the Texas Logging Council. Other than his family, Griffin Logging was his life.

Wayne was a member of New Life Fellowship Church, and supported the Nacogdoches Youth Softball Association as sponsor, coach, and commissioner.

Wayne was preceded in death by both of his parents; his son, John James “J.J.” Griffin; his brother, Billy Griffin; and his sister, Mary Griffin Hicks.

Wayne is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 10 years, Rhonda Cook Griffin of Nacogdoches; daughters Shelby Griffin, of Brooklyn, NY; Lesley Speaker and husband, Isaac, of Woden; and Katie Adams and husband Cody of Lufkin.

He is also survived by 6 grandchildren (Lillian Griffin, Hunter Speaker, Tarra Speaker, Magen Hendrix, Bryan Speaker, Ascher Adams) and 5 great- grandchildren (Brayden Newsom, Adriana Hendrix, Cassi Newsom, Brice Speaker, Ayden Hendrix), whose shenanigans and sweet giggles brought Grandfather tremendous joy.

Wayne is also survived by his brother Jimmy Griffin, of Nacogdoches; sisters-in-law Linda and Gerald Whisenant, of Etoile; Sue and Herman Pillows, of Lufkin; Gwenda and Roy Britt, of Etoile; Brenda and Billy Whitton, of Etoile; Jean Chambers, of Etoile; Julia and Kent Henson, of Lufkin; Sherron Cook, of Etoile; brother-in-law, Elvin “Hollywood” Cook, of Etoile; uncle, Pete Mason, of Henderson; aunt, Melba Beall, of Henderson; aunt, Cleo Mason, of Diboll; and a host of nieces and nephews. He always said that he loved his big family.

Wayne will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his generosity, and that twinkle in his eye.
