
Phyllis Mae Meyer, age 95, passed away on February 26, 2014 at Country View Haven in Napoleon. She was born on January 9, 1919 to Charles E. and Florice (Miller) Scofield of Florida, Ohio. She attended Florida School, where she was captain of the girls basketball team, and graduated second in her class. Phyllis graduated from BGSU with a degree in music. While at BGSU, she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority, where she made a number of life-long friends. In 1943, she married Julius “Jude” George Meyer, also of Florida; their happy marriage lasted for 67 years until his death in May 2010. From 1946 to 1948, Phyllis taught music at the Florida School, teaching all grades and directing the marching band. From 1956 to 1980, she taught elementary music and directed the Junior High School choir at the Holgate School. Phyllis was a long time member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, where she directed the choir and often provided special music on the piano. She also shared her love of music as she accompanied her friend, violinist Pauline Emmel, as they performed for groups around the area. In her later years, Phyllis enjoyed developing her skills as a photographer, winning many blue ribbons at the County Fair and a Toledo Blade photography contest. She also delighted family and friends with her portrait photography.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; sister Ruth ( Mrs. Glen) Hohenberger; brother, Norman Scofield; and daughter, Jane Elaine Meyer. She is survived by her loving and grateful children, Linda (Ted) Winzeler of Houston, Texas, James C. “Beeb” (Trish) Meyer of Napoleon, and Lee Ann Meyer of Merrillville, Indiana; grandchildren, Sarah (Mrs. Aaron) Tiplady, Alissa Meyer (Mrs. Brent) Cotton, Jessica Gray, Dajia Daniels (Mrs. Marc) Delgado, Cora Gray (Mrs. Scott) Sheets, Shayna Meyer, Elena Winzeler, Leah Meyer, Alexander Konecny, Craig Bailey, Eric Konecny, and Sean Johnston;and great-grandchildren, Zaiden Tiplady, Josh and Gabriel Delgado.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Snyder-Wesche Funeral Home, Napoleon, Ohio. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 1st at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Rt. 108 at Road J, north of Holgate.Luncheon will immediately follow the funeral service. Memorial donations are suggested to the church choir of St. John’s United Church of Christ, or to the donor’s choice.
