

Janet E. Bernard, 77, a lifelong resident of Nashua, NH passed away suddenly on Friday, June 19, 2015 at her home. She was born October 10, 1937 in Nashua, a daughter of the late Leo and Anne (Hurbonovich) Sliney.
Mrs. Bernard was educated in the Nashua School System. She received her BA from Smith College and her Master’s Degree from Harvard University. She was proud of her own education and took great pride in educating many students in Nashua as an English teacher. After four years of teaching, Mrs. Bernard served as the Vice President of West End Beverage Company in Nashua until 1984. Following that she resumed her 32 year career in the Nashua School System, retiring in 2013. Broadway theatre and world travel were also a significant part of her life. Mrs. Bernard was a devoted grandmother to her beloved Emma; in addition, she enjoyed going out to dinner with family and friends, loved animals - especially dogs - and appreciated literature. She was politically active and loved discussing current events. Mrs. Bernard was a member of the Nashua College Club, The St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, and the Nashua Country Club for over 50 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Rourke and son-in-law David of Nashua; her granddaughter, Emma Elizabeth Janet Rourke; her close friend and sister-in-law, Maddy Bernard of Nashua; a longtime friend and companion, Peter Everett of St. Petersburg, FL; many nieces, nephews, and extended family; and by her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Jack. She was predeceased by her husband, Lucien M. Bernard, in 1986.
Visiting hours were held Tuesday, June 23, 2015 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., Nashua. A Liturgy of the Word service was held Wednesday at 10:00am in St. Patrick Church, 29 Spring St., Nashua. Interment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, Ledge Road, Hudson, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Broadway Barks, c/o Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, 244 Fifth Avenue – Suite R290, New York, NY 10001.
