Goldie Azalea Mahan, age 96, of Nashville, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023 at the Brown County Health and Living Community. Born February 18, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska to her wonderful parents, Arthur Frank and Maude Azalea (Henkle) Herrell. She was first married in 1944 and later divorced in 1973 after thirty years of marriage after having had her two sons. Larry Gartin and Dan Gartin, the greatest joys of her life! She spent a few years as an EKG technician at Iowa Methodist Hospital from 1962 to 1965.
Goldie was very active in church work at the Grandview Park Baptist Church, was very dedicated toward missionary work and had invited many missionaries into her home, later keeping in touch with many each month for many years. She moved to Wabash Village in Nashville, Indiana in 1980. After living alone for thirteen years, she met Rev. Stanley Phillips Mahan in early 1986 and married him in July, 1986. After a two year illness, Stanley died in September, 1989. The happiness they shared was truly from the Lord, taking care of him at home until he died, holding her hand in his. Goldie’s writing and drawing helped her through those rough times, but God alone was the source of her real strength in it all.
A published writer, artist and lover of people, nature and all critters, Goldie loved life and her Lord who gave her that life. Whatever good anyone ever saw in her was nothing of herself. It was all of Christ in her. He was her Savior and constant companion. Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusted in him and I am helped, therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise”.
Have no sorrow for her. Stanley has been waiting for her and now the waiting is over. They are together again---and for Eternity. Praise the Lord!! Philippians 1:21, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville.
