

Anthony (Tony) Adrian Adgent of Nashville, TN passed away on December 23, 2017 at age 69. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lewis Adgent and Robbie Johnson Adgent and brother-in-law George Hofstetter. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Beth Hofstetter Adgent; sister Nancy Russell; brothers Tim (Betsy) and Bernard (Penny) Adgent; sisters-in-law Trudy Hofstetter and Katie Hofstetter Elcan; brother-in-law Jack Hofstetter; daughters Sarah Drennan (Chris) and Margaret Adgent (Allen Davis); grandchildren Gray, Oliver and Frances Drennan, and Greta and Ford Davis; nieces Heather Marcy, Libby Daughdrill (Jim), Katie Adgent, Elizabeth Elcan, and Caroline Elcan; and nephews Brad Hofstetter, Bryant Hofstetter, Tim Allen Adgent (Karla), John Adgent and Galen Elcan.
Tony was a graduate of Father Ryan High School (Class of 1966) and St. Ambrose University where he majored in Philosophy. His professional life began at the Tennessee Department of Human Services with one of the country’s first emergency child protective service units. His passion for learning and service eventually led him to Nashville School of Law, then on to a career as a criminal defense attorney and later as an administrative law judge. Tony’s life was further enriched through his experiences at Cumberland Heights, in his role in outreach ministries for the Catholic Diocese of Nashville, and mornings at the downtown YMCA.
Tony was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He was treasured by his family and friends for being smart, provocative and witty. He loved fast cars, big dogs, beautiful art, college football, the beach, the writings of Joseph Campbell and good rock ‘n roll.
A visitation will take place at Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home at 201 25th Ave North, Nashville 37203 at 4:00 to 7:00 pm on the evening of Wednesday, December 27. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, December 28 at 10:00 am at Cathedral of the Incarnation (2015 West End Avenue, Nashville 37203) with Father Edward Steiner officiating, a one hour visitation will be held prior to the service. Burial at Calvary Cemetery will follow.
Courtney Pearre, Bill Tice Williams, John Adgent, Bryant Hofstetter, Galen Elcan, Tim A. Adgent and Raymond Overton will serve as pallbearers. The Y Guys, Cumberland Heights Baby Boomers, Rev. Jim Tubbs, Bolin Stumb, Jean Pennington, Jim Zralek and Ed Johnston will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Tony’s family expresses special appreciation to the VAD/transplant team at St. Thomas West who gave us care and hope over the past 9 months.
