Van Cleave, Eleanor Roehl- age 87, of Nashville, died Thursday, July 26, 2018. She was born in Knoxville, TN on April 18, 1931, to Jay Alexander Roehl and Dorothy Beeman Roehl. She was a graduate of National Cathedral School in Washington D.C. and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was an active member of Alpha Omicron Pi. She married William Morley Van Cleave, of Chapel Hill, TN on February 3, 1951 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Knoxville, TN.
She enjoyed tennis, travel, reading and her many friends. She was a member of Junior League of Nashville, Centennial Club and a founding member of St. David’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and taught Sunday school. She volunteered at St. Thomas Hospital, tutored children at St. Luke’s Community Center, and for over 40 years served at the This n That Thrift Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Morley Van Cleave; is survived by children, William Morley Van Cleave, Jr. (Ann) of New Orleans, LA; Robert Roehl Van Cleave (Lea) of Nashville, TN; Caroline Jane Van Cleave Smith (David) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Sarah Eleanor Fitzsimmons Smith, William Morley Van Cleave III, (Lauren), Samuel Boyd Smith II, James Winfield Van Cleave, Robert Van Cleave Smith; great grandchild Alexander Robert Van Cleave; sister, Caroline Jane Roehl Bragg of Nashville, formerly of McMinnville, TN.; sister-in-law, Suellen Roehl Cate, Knoxville, TN and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Beeman Roehl Cook and brother, Jay Roehl, both Knoxville, TN, and her grandson, Alexander Roehl Van Cleave.
Visitation will be at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Sanders Hall, 6501 Pennywell Dr., Nashville, TN. 37205 from 5:00 to 7:00pm, Thursday, August 2, 2018. Funeral service will be Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11:00am at St. David’s Episcopal Church, with visitation at 10:00am prior to the service. Pallbearers are her nephews and grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers are J. Buist Richardson, III, William R. Petersen, David B. Graves, Jr., and Norman H. McNair. Interment service for family will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
