

JOHNSON, Gerald Lewis Dies at 79. Coach Johnson passed on November 14, 2010 from complications of Alzheimer's. A member of St. Edwards Church. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Sammie Lou Johnson; sisters, Martha Griffith and Frances Little; brothers, Earl Johnson and Gene Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Mahaffey Johnson; daughters, Lisa (David) Manning, Kellye (Jeff) Goostree and Lesley (Dave) Yoder. He was "Grandpa" to six grandchildren, Whitney Goostree Burton, Wyatt Goostree, Emily Manning, Meredith Manning, John Yoder and Emma Yoder and four great grandchildren. A formidable athlete and graduate of BGA and MTSU, Mr. Johnson served in the Marine Corps before obtaining his Masters Degree and beginning his teaching and coaching career. A recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, he was a member of the Hall of Fames at MTSU and BGA. His career included two Tennessean Coach of the Year Awards, a 1980 Baseball State Championship, induction into The Nashville Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, and the College Hall of Fame's Roy Kramer Contribution to Football Award. Coach Johnson would count the greatest of his achievements the opportunity to help his students and players find their path to success in school and in life. A favorite quote, "You're either moving forward or falling back, you're never standing still." Congratulations Coach, you are once again, moving forward. Services for Mr. Johnson will be at Woodlawn on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. with Father Joseph Breen officiating. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m.
