Jessie was born on 29 January 1923 in the Liberty Community of Granville, Jackson County, TN.
She was the 8th and last surviving of 11 children born to John Newton and Gorda Frances (Lambert) Cantrell. Ranking 2nd in her class, she was the first in her family to graduate from Algood High School, Putnam County, TN.
During WWII she worked as a “Rosy the Riveter” at Briggs Mfg. Co. in Detroit. Following the war she returned to Tennessee, attending Tennessee Tech University for 2 years. She married Vestle Odell Carmack on
June 25, 1947. She retired after 20 Years of service from the General Board of Discipleship of the
United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, her parents, and all her siblings. She is
survived by her sister-in-law Ruth Marie (Loftis) Cantrell, brothers-in-law James Carmack (Eunetta), Glynn Carmack (Linda Ryan), and
Bobby Carmack (Mary June), sister-in-law Betty Carmack Richardson (Jerry) and 31 nieces and nephews, cousin Rose O’Hara and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Jessie was a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church and a resident of The Heritage at Brentwood since 2007.
Gathering of family and friends will be held at Woodlawn Roesch Patton Funeral Home on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from one o’clock until two at Woodlawn.
Celebration of life service will be Saturday, January 12, 2019 at two thirty in the afternoon, Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall.
