Mr. Todd was born in Nashville, Tennessee on December 10, 1934, the son of Louis B. Todd, Sr. and Ruth McLaughlin Todd. He graduated from Robertson Academy and Montgomery Bell Academy and received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1956, one week before marrying Patricia Anne Cassell, originally of Bristol, Virginia. They were married for 59 years, until her death in October 2015.
Mr. Todd began his forty-three-year career in the securities industry in Nashville at Jack M. Bass & Company where he was Vice President and head trader. From 1966 to 1972 he worked at the Equitable Securities W.H. Morton & Company division of American Express and their predecessor Equitable Securities Corporation, opening their New York City office and moving his family to Morristown, New Jersey in 1971. In 1972 he joined the Robinson-Humphrey Company as First Vice President in charge of their New York office. In 1982, Mr. Todd became Managing Director of Equity Trading at Morgan Keegan & Company in Memphis, Tennessee and served on the firm's Board of Directors and Capital Markets Committee. In 1985 he returned to Nashville as General Partner and Managing Director of Equity Trading at J.C. Bradford & Company where he worked until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the New York Stock Exchange and the Boston Stock Exchange.
The Securities Traders Association, comprised of members from the United States, Canada, and Europe, elected Mr. Todd to their board and as Treasurer, Vice President, Executive Vice President, and Chairman. Mr. Todd served the National Association of Securities Dealers, the industry's self-regulatory body, on the District 5 Business Conduct Committee as its Chairman, on the Market Surveillance Committee, and on the Listings Qualifications Committee. Mr. Todd was the President of the Nashville Securities Dealers Association and a member of several committees of the Security Traders of New York.
Mr. Todd's professional accomplishments are eclipsed by the innumerable contributions he made to his community. He credited Billy Jim Vaugh, Scoutmaster of Troop #1 at Brentwood Methodist Church, for teaching him that one must "leave the woodpile stacked higher than it was when you found it." Mr. Todd and his wife joined Woodmont Christian Church in 1956, and when they returned to Nashville in 1985, they rejoined the congregation. Mr. Todd served the church in many capacities, including Elder, member of the Stewardship and Endowment Committees, and Chairman of the Official Board. He remained devoted to Montgomery Bell Academy and was President of the Alumni Board and served on the Board of Trustees. His love of music led him to the Nashville Symphony where he was Chairman of the Board and a member of the Endowment and Finance Committees. He endowed the Patricia C. Todd Scholarship Fund at the Nashville Ballet. He gave his time and resources to many other organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, Nashville Children's Alliance, Blakeford, the YMCA, veterans' organizations, and Fannie Battle Day Home. He was a member of Belle Meade Country Club, the National Commodore Club, and the Princeton Club of New York. Nothing short of a dire emergency could stop him from attending a Vanderbilt football, basketball, or baseball game, and he never stopped believing that a Commodore victory was just around the corner.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Pat and dear sister Jane Todd Smead. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Patricia Todd Kelly and Sean Kelly of Brooklyn, New York; Louis B. Todd, III and Julie Portwood Todd of Atlanta; and James Harwell Todd and Bonney Guy Todd of Nashville and five grandchildren: Charles McLaughlin Kelly; Louis B. Todd, IV; Andrew Julian Todd; Anne Louis Todd; and James Harwell Todd, Jr.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Blakeford at Home and Alive Hospice for their compassionate care, and they deeply appreciate the love and support shown by Lou's many friends during his illness.
There will be a visitation on Monday, November 27th at Woodmont Christian Church from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. A second visitation will be at Woodmont on Tuesday, November 28th at noon, followed by the funeral at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Woodmont Christian Church, Nashville Symphony, or Montgomery Bell Academy.
