Robert William Downing III

Born on November 12, 1950, in Nashville, Robert was the beloved son of the late Robert "Bob" William Downing II and Ruby Rager Downing. A proud graduate of Maplewood High School, he went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in Marketing/Business from Middle Tennessee State University.

Robert honorably served his country in the Tennessee Air National Guard for 28 years. His lifelong devotion to service was matched only by his deep love and commitment to his family.

On October 10, 1987, Robert married, Marcia J. Haney, in Nashville, Tennessee. Robert built a long and successful career in the insurance industry, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. Outside of work, he had a deep passion for NASCAR, football, and hockey—interests he enthusiastically shared with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia H. Downing; his children, Jeffrey Downing, Emily Morgenstern (Cheyenne Murphy), and James Morgenstern (Brittany); and his cherished grandchildren, Lucas J. Rainey and Hudson B. Rainey. He was preceded in death by parents, Robert "Bob" William Downing II, Ruby Rager Downing, and his dear mother-in-law, Barbara J. Haney.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, TN 37204. Additional visitation will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location.
