One of the most dedicated crew leaders we have ever had at Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury (HFHWM) was Scott Carter. 
 
Scott was born with a condition called aphasia which manifests as a language processing and learning issue. One of the positive characteristics of aphasia is that Scott is very structured and prompt. The first one on the build site, and the last to go home, Scott’s warm smile and ready laugh helped create an inclusive, warm feeling on the build site. As one of our volunteers said, “Scott is so welcoming and thoughtful - he is a ray of sunshine!”

Scott worked Monday through Friday at Rock City Machine, served as a door greeter on Sundays at Christ United Methodist Church, and every Saturday, for more years than any of us can remember - 15 years at least - he volunteered with us at Habitat. 

When asked why he spent his Saturdays volunteering with Habitat Scott replied with his characteristic huge grin, “Coming out to build doesn’t feel like work. It’s fun. It’s where I want to be. The other crew leaders and the families (future homeowners), that’s why we come, right?”

Scott worked well with all volunteers, but he took special care of his fellow crew leaders, bringing a cooler with each person’s favorite flavor of Gatorade, hauling extra chairs for others to rest in over lunch, and even buying tool belts and hammers for a handful of his close crew leader buddies.

As the years went by we at Habitat were blessed to witness Scott's growing self-confidence as he has learned to lead others. He was a bit shy in the beginning, but that big smile of his had a way of drawing people in and once he warmed up, he was the friendliest guy around. 

We at HFHWM were truly blessed to know Scott and miss his beautiful soul beyond measure.

I was one of Scott's teachers during his middle school years.  Scott was a continual pleasure and joy to be around.  He had the quality of always thinking of others, always trying to please others, that stood out as exceptional in the middle school setting.  He had a loving, giving nature that radiating from him at all times.  No matter what, he always seemed happy and his happiness was contagious, he spread it like sunshine everywhere he went.  I still cannot think of him without smiling.  Full credit to his parents for raising such a considerate and joyful person.

Scott and I worked together for over 20 years. He started out as a helper but soon became my partner. More times than I can count I was struggling with what to do next on the jobs where everything was going wrong and he always had an idea. He had a way of seeing the big picture like the pieces to the puzzles he always like to do. I never wanted anybody else out there in the field with me. And I’m always gonna miss him.  My homie. RIP buddy.

Dear Sue and Russ,

I'm a friend of Sylvia's.  She has kept me in the loop of Scott and Russ as they have grown into Wonderful Young Men.  She is such a proud Aunt. 

I am looking toward the day we will be with Scott again, in all his splendor at that Great Reunion JESUS has made possible.  That has kept me going these last 7 months, after loosing a nephew tragically. 

For those that love the LORD, the Best is yet to come.❤️

Scott was the kindness soul I've ever met. I remember when Mike DeWeese and I was tearing down the racks one year at the clothes give a way. It would have taken us a very long time out of nowhere came Scott and he helped us with all of it. Never complained just jumped in and I can say he saved our tails that day. I'll never forget Scott. I had some good conversations at church with him. I'll miss him. RIP My friend, you deserve it. 

Ken - I always enjoyed seeing Scott at Rock City Machine and at gatherings since he was always so friendly.  I know how special your relationship was with Scott and am so sad for your loss. Scott’s kindness touched many lives, and he will be missed by many.  I will be praying for you and your family during this very difficult time and in the days ahead.

I remember Scott as such a sweet kind person.  Yes, I only knew him as a young child but when he comes in my mind I always think kind.  I am thinking of all of you during this time.  We love you Scott
