Susan was the child of Helen Marie Olin Klein and Francis Michael Klein. She was born in Syracuse, New York on November 10, 1937. Her family lived in Hollywood, Florida and spent summers on the finger lakes in upstate New York. Susan graduated with honors from Ft. Lauderdale High School and received a scholarship to nursing school at Florida State University in Tallahassee.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she went to work New York Presbyterian Cornell Hospital and later Columbian Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She was involved in pioneering trauma care in 1960s at one of the premier trauma research units at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She married John Christopher Burch, Jr. and they had three children: Frances, Christina and John. In 1975 they moved from New York to Nashville. Susan was passionate about music and the arts and was classically trained in voice and sang with the New York Choral Society.
In Nashville, she was instrumental in raising money for the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and other charities. She was an avid traveler and supporter of the arts.
She is survived by her husband and three children, Frances Burch, Christina Burch, and John Burch and granddaughter Elizabeth Burch.
