Vallie passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Dyer and Earl Seay Brooks, along with his wife of forty years, Nancy Ezell Brooks. He is survived by children Margaret (Meg) Clawson (Rusty) of Memphis, Vallie (Chip) Jr and Leah Brooks-Wehby, both of Nashville, three grandchildren, Vallie Carlton Brooks III (Trey), Nancy-Margaret Wehby, Samuel Gregory Brooks and sister, Sue Ferrell (Gilbert) of Wilson, NC.
Vallie was born in Wilson, NC at the start of The Great Depression. He was born the eighth of twelve children. After graduating from Charles L. Coon high school he served in the Army Air Corps. After his discharge he earned his BA and LLB degrees from Duke University.
Vallie began his fifty year legal career in 1954 with the Office of Chief Council in the Internal Revenue Service, Washington D.C. In 1963, the IRS transferred him to the Office of District Council in Nashville, TN. He was a practicing trial attorney and was involved in numerous cases, of which 64 were reported Tax Court opinions.
Vallie was an active member of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville along with a host of organizations, including The American Legion Post 5, NARFE and The Tennessee Democratic Party.
Vallie retired in 2004 and spent the ensuing years attending local social events, dancing, singing and, most of all, enjoying his three grandchildren with all their activities in and out of school and church.
Vallie's life will be celebrated 11 am Saturday March 12th at West End United Methodist Church with visitation from 9 am to 11 am in the church's Reed Hall.
Vallie's family requests in lieu of flowers, all offerings be made, in his memory, to West End United Methodist Church and or the charity of choice.
