Virginia Lee Robinson Highfill, 92, passed away June 19, 2019 at Flesher's Fairview Retirement Community in Fairview, NC. She was born in Chattanooga, TN on August 7, 1926 to the late Claude Russell and Onice Pearl Wilson Robinson.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Holmes Highfill, Jr. and brother, William Robinson.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Herbert Holmes Highfill,III and wife, Kathy Ann Hartley and Philip Lee Highfill. Virginia Lee (aka "Ginny") spent most of her youth in Columbus, Mississippi, and attended Mississippi State College for Women after graduating High School. After teaching a few years, she went back to earn her Masters Degree at Ole Miss. She taught school in Oregon and Arkansas before getting a job as a commercial artist at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. It was during this time she met her husband, Herbert Highfill (aka "Bo").
Ginny and Bo were married December 29, 1959 in Columbus, Mississippi and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Bo had a film editing position. After a couple of years, there, and with their first baby on the way, they decided to move to Nashville in 1961, where Herb, their first son, was born. 3 years later, they had their last son, Philip, in 1964. She became the perfect homemaker and loved spending time with her children.
Throughout the years, Ginny volunteered to help in the schools, the Cub Scouts, and their church. She loved her family, and also loved pulling the family together to go to "homecomings" in Toccopola, Mississippi whenever she could.
As the boys got older, Ginny returned to teaching school for a few years, and when Herb and Philip went off to school, she enjoyed the last years of her husband's life in retirement with him. When Bo died in 1998, Ginny was left to re-learn the facets of being an independent woman again, which she did very well. She loved her friends from church, and was quite the socialite throughout those years. In 2003, she even became a licensed Spiritual Practitioner at the age of 77 through her church, the Center for Spiritual Living.
In 2016, after having lived in Nashville for 55 years, Ginny made the decision to move to Asheville to be closer to family (Herb and Kate) and in 2018, Philip moved up to Asheville, as well. Her daughter-in-law, Kate, was her primary caregiver during that time. She always enjoyed the visits from family and friends that traveled to visit her during her last years.
On June, 19, 2019, Virginia Lee made her transition, and was surrounded by family. She had a beautiful, full and enriching life. She was a great daughter, cousin and sister, an incredible wife and an outstanding mother. We will miss her every day.
Memorial Services will be held October 5th - 10:00 a.m. - at the Center for Spiritual Living Nashville (CSLN) - Sanctuary / Chapel. 6705 Charlotte Pike - Nashville, TN 37209. Dr. Mitch Johnson, Senior Minister Emeritus (who presided over Bo Highfill's service in 1998) will be presiding.
