Edward Guadalupe Galvan loved to talk, loved to make friends and was a great story teller. He gave us so many vivid images of what his life was like growing up; images of his home as a child; stories of his dad and his Native American culture. He loved his brothers and his sisters. His dad was Joe Galvin, and mom Gregoria Galvin. He had 4 brothers, Valentine, Billy, Phillip, Richie. Three sisters. Sarah, Rosie and Rachel. Edward Guadalupe Galvan was the baby of the family. He was the last of the family born and the last to pass from this life.
Eddie married the love of his life Licha Gomez on June 29th, 1963. Together they have two children; Andrea and Eddie Jr. Eddie and Licha have 3 grandchildren; Elizabeth (Chris), Justin and Lauren and two great grandchildren; Alyssa and Landon. He also gained a son-n-law Chris Holiman.
Eddie loved to garden. Planting vegetables, flowers, and pruning trees. Later in life, when he was in his wheelchair, he was still cultivating the dirt in his yard. He instilled that love of gardening in his children.
My dad loved Logan Heights, the area where he grew up, or “The Valley” as he would call it. As a child he would play in the creek and ride his bike with his dog Streak on the back in a wooden box. Dad loved going to Chicano Park. The VFW in Barrio Logan was his hang out spot to have a couple of cold ones with his buddies. My dad also loved to cruise. Shades on and Budweiser in a bag in the cup holder.
Dad had a passion for writing. He wrote notes and dates on everything! Those dates and notes are priceless for us now, but he did most of his writing on the typewriter. He typed his family history, stories of his dad, letters to people who wrote to him these last two years.
He loved to read as well, lots of Native American history.
Eddie was a strong-willed man and that strong will gave him 2 years longer than anyone expected, enjoying his final days in his home.
My dad trusted in Jesus and he asked the Lord to be his Savior in his life. He was a Catholic and strongly believed in his faith. This was a verse I wrote and taped on his table. 2 Timothy 1:7. For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Dad needed the Holy Spirit to give him courage as he faced fearful situations. He needed the spirit to give him power to endure suffering and have hope, and love to get by each day.
The house is quiet now and his presence will forever be missed. He lived life on his terms and God blessed him with a family who loved him very much.
