He was very happy and pleased that most of us along with numerous friends were with him in June 2009 to celebrate his 85th birthday celebration.
Uncle Art received his education at Bear Creek School and for Grade 11 he boarded in Neepawa and went to high school there. The following year he took a commercial course at Success Business College in Winnipeg.
In 1946 he started to work in the office for Swift Canadian Co Ltd. he continued to work at Swifts until the closing of the St Boniface Plant in 1980, at which time he was supervisor over telecommunications, order writing, stationery and the mail department. In 1980 he received full retirement benefits from Swifts. He lived in his little two bedroom house across from Swifts for many years so all he had to do to go to work was walk across the street. He always said the smells from the Swifts plant blew high over his house.
He was very involved with the United Church over the years as a Board member; Elder and a beautiful church organist. He loved and continued to play the piano and organ all his life.
He joined the Fraternal Society in 1948, The Canadian Order of Forrester's, where he served many positions within the organization. In 1966 he was presented Forester of the Year Award, an award for outstanding. Meritorious fraternal services to the principals of brotherhood and selfless interest in all mankind. For many years of his retirement he lived in the Forrester's block on St Anne's road.
If you are a Volunteer you can always find something to do! Over the years he was a Guild member of the Manitoba Historical Society, a volunteer at the Sir John McDonald house, giving tours once a week during the winter months.
He was also a volunteer at the Manitoba Society of Seniors, where loving travelling, he was able to plan and escort many trips for the society members over the years which he enjoyed immensely and talked about often.
He enjoyed theatre, travelogues, bowling, curling and playing cards in the winter and fishing and travelling in summer.
Uncle Art loved being in the country and visited often. He would always drive around the countryside and visit numerous cousins along the way. If you were living in the City and getting a ride out to Gladstone or Neepawa with Uncle Art, you knew it would be a four hour drive, not a two hour drive.
As small children his nieces and nephews would be excited he was coming to the country. He loved to fish and play ball with us and he usually arrived with his camera in hand and sometimes with a pocket full of gold chocolate coins as a treat. On special occasions we sometimes got a silver dollar from him and he would talk to us about the value of saving our money for later years.
He loved to travel. In 1949 he took his very first holiday trip by bus with his sister Lillian. They travelled to Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle then back to Winnipeg. This bus trip booked through Mackie Travel only cost him about $60.00.
He was very proud of his Ferguson heritage and he visited friends and cousins in England twice over the years 1968 and 1983. He was very pleased that his second generation cousin Robert Ferguson was doing such a great job of keeping the Ferguson family history up to date.
He loved travelling very much and took many other trips that he always enjoyed to the fullest.
A wonderful Uncle and a true friend to many, he will be sadly missed.
Rest in Peace Uncle Art
