Bernard Marinus Damen

Bernie, as he was known to all who knew him, was born in 1941 in Den Bosch, Holland - a town famous for Heineken, Bassche bollen (chocolate balls), and vibrant Carnaval celebrations. One of 11 children, he immigrated to Canada in 1958 and established deep roots in the Elmwood neighbourhood, where he resided for more that six decades. A dedicated community member and retired Winnipeg Transit employee, Bernie loved driving an traveling in his VW bus and Westfalia camper vans. Though a man of few words, he was always ready for a good time and was consistently the first on the dance floor with his lifelong love an favourite partner, whom he married in 1961. He will be fondly remembered for his steadfast nature, warm sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to his family. Among his fondest memories were the countless summer days spent surrounded by family, friends, and community at Gull Lake, Manitoba. Gull Lake was his true sanctuary- a place to unwind, play rounds of golf with his beloved wife, and take immense pride in watching his children grow up enjoying minibikes, boating, and all the simple pleasures of childhood.

Bernard is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Damen. He was a devoted father to Jackie Damen (Geoff Little), Jeffrey, and Ted; a cherished grandfather to Trisha and Ed Damen; and a proud great-grandfather to Aubrey, Kendra-Lee, and Karly-Ann. He will also be dearly missed by his surviving sisters in Holland, Christien Buitenkamp and Lenie Ven Santvoort, his sister-in-law, Alice Damen, and the countless individuals to whom he generously offered his time and assistance, be it driving sick children or helping a friend with a project.
