Charlene Gail Davies

Charlene Gail Davies entered the world alongside her twin sister, Shelley, on February 24, 1961. Born prematurely and weighing just 3 pounds, 15 ounces, Charlene showed remarkable strength from the very beginning. That strength remained with her throughout her life, including during the four years she lived with adenoid cystic carcinoma. Even through the most difficult days, she remained determined to enjoy every moment she could, meeting life with courage, a strong will, and her unforgettable, uplifting smile.

Charlene was equally at home in many different settings and always entirely herself. She loved dressing casually and spending time outdoors: watching the birds gather around her feeders and birdhouses, walking and hiking, relaxing on pontoon boats, cruising the ocean, boating from her Florida home, collecting shells on Sanibel Island, lying in the sun, salmon fishing, and picking blueberries or orchard fruit, even if it meant occasionally arguing with a bear over a pail of berries.

She was just as comfortable dressing things up. Charlene had a special fondness for clothing, jewelry, makeup, and shoes. She could happily browse the finest designer stores one day and search for hidden treasures at Goodwill or a second-hand shop the next. She knew how to look stunning in her finest attire, but she was equally content relaxing at home in the softest, most comfortably worn clothes she owned (often with a well-loved hole or two!).

Creative and endlessly curious, Charlene loved a challenge. She enjoyed quilting, making shell crafts, completing puzzles, reading, cooking, playing pickleball, and gathering for games of cribbage and Rummikub. More recently, she tried her hand at watercolor painting. Her love of shelling was especially evident in the floor-to-ceiling cupboard filled with her treasured collection.

Travel was another of Charlene’s great passions. Through her career with Air Canada and the journeys she took following her retirement, she had the opportunity to explore numerous countries across six continents. She delighted in experiencing different cultures, enjoying fine dining, and creating wonderful memories wherever her travels took her. Charlene embraced the adventure and joy of going somewhere new, making lasting friendships along the way.

Above all, Charlene cared deeply for the people she loved. One of the greatest joys of her life was spending time with her son, Logan; her daughter-in-law, Amanda; and her six-year-old twin grandsons, Eli and Austin. She was a devoted and encouraging mother, supporting Logan through his many interests, including dirt bike racing, hockey, and fishing.

Family remained at the centre of Charlene’s life. In recent years, she faithfully cared for her father, Ron, bringing him homemade meals and, just as importantly, the comfort of her presence. She also treasured the close friendships she shared with her girlfriends in Canada and Cape Coral. Charlene loved wholeheartedly, and those fortunate enough to be part of her life always knew how deeply she cared.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Grant; her son, Logan, and daughter-in-law, Amanda; her grandsons, Eli and Austin; her father, Ron; her twin sister, Shelley, and brother-in-law, Jean-Marc; her niece and nephew, Breanne and Matthew; her great-nieces and great-nephew, Mia, Olivia, and Jack; her beloved dog, Missy; and her many friends and extended family members.

Char, you are now free to walk quickly and travel far once again. You can run, play pickleball, snorkel, talk and laugh with ease, fill your days with all the things you love, and be reunited with those who went before you.

Though it feels much too soon for you to leave us, we are deeply thankful for every moment we shared. We will carry our memories of you with us and cherish them always.

This is not goodbye—the words are simply too difficult to say. It is only, “See you later.”

We are also grateful to the dedicated, compassionate, and knowledgeable medical professionals who helped Charlene maintain her health and quality of life for as long as possible, especially Dr. Anne Durcan of Winnipeg; Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Yasufuku, Dr. Cho, and Dr. Yeung of Toronto; the nurses on the fifth floor of Victoria General Hospital; and the nurses and physicians of the Winnipeg Palliative Care at Home Program.

Please join us as we honour Charlene and cherish the time we were fortunate to share with her.

Guests are encouraged to wear blue, aquamarine, or any shade of pink—colours Charlene especially loved.
