After a lengthy and courageous battle with ALS, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Francesco Siragusa on September 9, 2025, at the age of 88.
Francesco leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 60 years, Carmela (née Rizzo); his children Agostino (Lanette), Rosalinda (Terry), Marisa (Aaron), and Silvia; and his cherished grandchildren Austin, Amanda, Jared, Ryan, Ethan, Kevin, and Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings Maria, Angela (Lina), and Tony.
He was predeceased by his parents, Agostino and Rosa Siragusa, as well as his siblings Giovanna, Santina, and Joe.
Francesco was born on February 8, 1937, in Termini Imerese, Sicily, Italy, to Agostino and Rosa Siragusa. He was one of seven siblings in a close-knit and loving family.
After spending his early years in post-war Sicily, Francesco made the brave decision to immigrate to Canada, joining a few of his siblings who had already settled in Winnipeg. It was there that he built a life filled with devotion to family, hard work, and quiet strength.
Francesco had a deep love for flowers and possessed an incredible green thumb. His garden was his sanctuary, and he tended it with great joy and meticulous care. He especially took immense pride in his grapevines, which flourished under his watchful eye. They were a living connection to his Sicilian roots and a symbol of the patience and dedication that defined his life. His garden was more than just a place of beauty—it was an extension of who he was.
He was immensely proud of his Sicilian heritage. A founding member of the Club Siciliano of Winnipeg, he was also the longtime manager of the Sicilian Club Folk Dancers, sharing his love of traditional dance with the community. His passion led the group on many memorable trips throughout Canada and the United States—experiences he cherished deeply.
Francesco spent his final six years at Riverview Health Centre, where he received extraordinary care from a team that became like family. Their compassion, creativity, and unwavering support enriched his life in countless ways—igniting a late-in-life passion for crafts, artwork, and creative expression in various forms. Those years were filled with color, joy, and dignity thanks to their efforts.
Francesco will be remembered for his enduring love for his family, his resilience, and his unwavering pride in his roots. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, community, and cultural pride that will live on in all who knew him.
