It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, Giuseppe Antonio Torchia.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Antonietta, his daughters, Anna (Frank) Cianflone, Felicia (Fred) Kriegl and his beloved grandchildren, Alicia (Mark), Adam and Alessandra. He is predeceased by his parents, Anna and Felice Torchia, his in-laws, Basilio and Serafina Falvo and his siblings from Italy, Lucia, Esterina, Maria, Antonietta and Lucio. He is survived by Lucio’s wife, Rosalba Costa, nieces Rosella Arabia, Anna Torchia, Rachele, Annamaria and Alessandra Mancusi, nephew, Pierpaolo Torchia, and their families in Italy and the Falvo family here in Winnipeg.
Giuseppe was born in Miglierina, Calabria, Italy. He left his entire family at the age of 22 to immigrate to Canada in pursuit of a better life and to marry Antonietta in 1957. They settled in Transcona and Dad began working for Display Fixtures. He then moved into a custodial position with TSSD until his retirement in 1997.
Dad was very resourceful, using his many skills and talents to be an artist, a carpenter, a wine-maker and a landscaper. His greatest joy was his grandchildren, often following them around with his camera and always greeting them with “Hello Beautiful, Hi Handsome.” Sunday family dinners at his home on Brewster Bay made him the happiest. In winter, he enjoyed travelling to his favorite warm destinations of Cuba, Mexico and Hawaii.
Dad experienced declining health for the past 3 years after being diagnosed with Dementia. We are forever grateful to the caring and compassionate staff of Deer Lodge Tower 7/6 who provided us with tremendous support and showed dad patience, warmth and understanding. We would also like to thank our family and friends for their continuous love and support during this difficult time.
To honour Dad’s wishes, there will be a private family service with Rev. Sam Argenziano officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Deer Lodge Center Foundation, Dementia Unit.
