Peacefully on September 20, 2025 at Charleswood Care Centre, Lil (Huckle) passed away at the age of 97 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Sandra (Brian) and Colleen (Bob), grandchildren Shawn (Amanda), Randy, Trevor (Cheryl), Darryl (Ashley), great-grandchildren Ty, Kale, Kenadi, Shaya, extended family Tanner (Shania), Dylan, Ellianna, Annabelle, Everle and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Edward (Ed), parents John and Alexandra brother Victor.
Mom was born in Komarno, Manitoba and moved with her family to a farm near Oakbank where she attended from grade 4 to grade 11. This is where “Huckle” met her future husband “Clem”.
After finishing school, Mom moved to Port Arthur/Fort William (now Thunder Bay, Ontario), where she worked at Woolworth’s. Then, through a friend, started working at TD bank, which led to her lifelong career in banking, from teller, to foreign exchange to supervisor of proof department to internal auditor. She retired from CIBC at 62 years of age.
Lil and Ed married in July of 1950. They lived in Ontario when they were first married, then returned to Winnipeg a few years later. They purchased their first house on Jamerson Avenue, their number one bundle of joy, Sandra, was born in 1954. Then in 1955 Ed, with the help of some family and friends, built their home on Government Avenue, where bundle of joy number two, Colleen, came into the world in 1956. Mom and Dad remained in that home for 60 years, then moved to an apartment, when mobility became a bit of an issue.
Together, the family enjoyed vacations, tent and trailer camping, and time at the cabins at Caddy Lake, Belair and Lac du Bonnet. As empty nesters, our parents did some travelling, to Hawaii, the Bahamas, the U.S. and from coast to coast in Canada.
Mom enjoyed bowling, curling, knitting, playing cards with friends and spending time with family and over the years enjoyed special friendships
Helen Porteous (nee Sellen) was Mom’s first close friendship. Helen lived on a farm about a mile from the Finchuk farm. When Mom got home from visiting with Helen, she would light the lantern in her bedroom window to let Helen know that she was home and to say goodnight. And then Helen would answer with a blink of her own lantern. This friendship remained after Helen married Robert and the four of them spent many happy times together.
Special friends include, but are not limited to: The Skolnys, Gordon and Rita Ives, the McColls, the Burtons, Joyce and Steve Wolfe, the Zurchers, Mary and John Koniak, Paul and Anne Moroz, the Leftkos, Inga and Klaus Doose, the Cassells, the Korocils,
Sundays were often spent with Dad’s family at the Palidwor farm in Oakbank with brother Harry (Nettie), sister Mary (Harry) Surzyshyn, brother Norman (Doreen), brother Emil, and brother Walter (Betty) and nieces and nephews. Mom was very close with Dad’s family and thought of them as her own sisters and brothers and the feeling was mutual. Mom is the last of that generation of both the Finchuk and Palidwor families.
Later in life Mom became remarkably proficient with her iPad and her iPhone. Each morning she faithfully read the news, keeping herself well informed on events in both Alberta and Manitoba. She valued staying connected with her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. These connections brought her great joy. She had an amazing memory for birthdays, too, and always made people smile when she sent them a message right on their special day.
Rest in peace, Mom, Gramma, Great-Gramma. We love you.
Special thanks to the staff of 5 North at Victoria Hospital and Unit 3 at Charleswood Care Centre for their kind and gentle care.
A memorial service will be held at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway 1 East at Navin Road , in Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025. It will also be live streamed and a link will be provided on her obituary at www.greenacresfuneralhome.com
