Lily Goritz

Lily passed away comfortably & peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre on December 30, 2021 at 10:35 am. Moments prior the chaplain had visited with Lily, to pray, read scriptures & sing to her. Lily journeyed on with hymns softly playing in her room & health care staff at her side.

Lily was predeceased by her father Rudolph Goritz & mother Lydia Goritz (Weidman), 3 brothers: Ewald, Carl & Rudy, her sister Rose (who passed at age 2 yrs), sister-in-laws Martha & Clara & niece Marlene (all Goritz).

Lily is survived by one brother Harold, nieces Sandra, Twyla, and Shannon (Danny), sister-in-law Mary, nephews Derek, Glenn (Inga), Leonard (Betty), Larry (Sharon), and Gordon (Marie), as well as many great nieces & nephews.

Lily was born in Friedensfeld, MB just south of Steinbach. In 1937 the family moved to Dencross, MB where at the time there were no schools as this was considered to be ‘unorganized territory’. Lily grew up helping to run the family farm and did any chore that needed to be done.

As Lily grew older she began raising turkeys and selling them to the Thanksgiving market. Her sales reached as far as Kenora, Ontario. One year she was fined because at that time farmers were not allowed to sell outside of their home province. She loved her plants and gardening. Later Lily moved to Winnipeg and worked several jobs. One being at Quintons. She later began a career at Health Sciences Center –a job she held for decades- most of her working career. She worked her way up to Dishroom Supervisor where she was respected by her co-workers and all those working in the dishroom, kitchen, cooks area, pot wash and salad area. Lily retired from her position as Dishroom Supervisor after many years of service and immediately began travelling short and long distances. Retired life began an exciting chapter for Lily beginning with the announcement of her first trip to Alaska, then many visits to the US to see her nephew Derek and sightseeing to most of the Canadian Provinces, her favorites were Ontario and BC to visit with relatives. Local Manitoba trips were plentiful over the years and included attending the many rural festivals and local fall suppers which she would plan months in advance. Lily drove herself and we would hear of her adventures after she returned. Lily loved attending block birthday parties, bingo and other activities. Lily was a very independent woman, bold, determined strong and self-sufficient. Her retirement seemed to bring her great happiness and many adventures.

One of her former dishroom employees – Leo Ardiles, has sent condolences with these kind words… “She was tough on us but with a caring heart. She sure taught us west end boys discipline. She had a warm smile. Always remember her telling the girls from beltline to “Leave my boys alone”.

Lily was God loving. She had something good to say about almost everyone she met. Her heart was kind and made of gold. Lily lived each day of her life with her Lord in her heart. She now walks with him and resides in one of the many rooms of the Lords’ home in Heaven.

Family extends thanks to Deer Lodge Centre for the exceptional care that Lily received during her time there. Staff became her ‘second family’ – we especially thank the entire health care team on 3E. Thanks to her niece Sandra who provided assistance, comfort and support during her time at DLC. Honorary Pall Bearer is great nephew – Justin Goritz.

Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street in Winnipeg on Saturday January 8, 2022 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Don Engel. Viewing will begin at 12:30 pm. A catered luncheon will follow the service at the church. All funeral attendees are invited to attend.

All attendees MUST be double vaccinated and wear masks. All Covid guidelines will be followed.

Proof of vaccination along with ID is required to be shown prior to entry into the church. Burial to take place at Green Acres Cemetery on Monday January 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Please RSVP to Harold prior to Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 204-253-7373 for service and luncheon attendance numbers or simply to chat, reminisce and offer condolences.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lutheran Church of the Cross.
