With sadness we announce the passing of Madeline Irene Petrovich, peacefully on April 7, 2020, at the age of 94 years.
Madeline was predeceased by her parents, Annette and William Matthes; husband Edward Petrovich; brothers, Joe (Ruth), Emil (Reta), Willis and infant Bobby; sister-in-law Alma, and son Robert. She is survived by her son Jeff Petrovich and granddaughter Nyah of British Columbia; her brother Irvin Matthes of Penticton, BC, and sister-in-law Hertha Matthes of Winnipeg. Madeline will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Madeline was born in Winnipeg and raised in the Elmwood area. In 1948 she married Ed and they made a home and raised their family in the Bronx Park area of East Kildonan. They enjoyed many summers at their cottage at Star Lake. Over the years, Madeline gave her time and energy to the neighbourhood. She and Ed looked after the Bronx Park Community Club for over 15 years, contributing to the hockey program, running the canteen and helping with other events. Madeline performed volunteer work with seniors at the club and helped run the weekly bingo.
Madeline was always very sports-minded. She was an avid fan of both the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A longtime bowler, she was treasurer of her bowling league at Rossmere Lanes for 15 years. Some of her other hobbies included knitting, sewing and crocheting.
Madeline's sense of humour and quick wit were her trademark. A lifelong member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, she had a firm foundation of Christian faith that sustained her throughout her life.
The family expresses thanks and appreciation to the staff of Lions Personal Care Centre for their compassionate care of Madeline over the past 18 months.
Cremation has taken place and due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines, a funeral service will be held at a later date.
