Peacefully, following a brief illness, it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Roger Poitras with his family by his side on January 21, 2026.
Roger will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years Victoria (Vicki), his 3 sons Michael (Bonny), Alan (Karen), and Richard (Kim). He also leaves to mourn his 7 grandsons Kristian (Katie), Andrew (Jessica), Steven (Jessica), Colin (Jenna), Matthew (Melissa), Kevin, and Blake; great grandchildren Devon, Kadence, Reese, Maya, Nolan, Noah, Aurora, Mason, Maverick, Abigail, Bennett, Nathan, and Caiden; sister Terri and brother Gerald (Dale).
Roger grew up in St. Boniface where he established a large group of friends, whose families became friends for life. The “gang” as they were affectionately known, were frequently gathering along with their families, providing friendship, comradery, and enjoying everything about life.
Roger met Vicki in 1957 and later married in 1958. In 1960, they bought their first home in Transcona where they raised their 3 boys. Roger was a volunteer coach, first coaching youth baseball, then coaching and refereeing for many years in the Transcona Minor Hockey Association. Roger was very community minded and volunteered with organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Junior Achievement, the Maple Leaf Community Club, and many other organizations. Roger began his career with the CPR and then in 1973 he joined the newly formed Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation where he worked for 25 years in both Winnipeg and Steinbach, before retiring in 1996.
Camping and lake life with friends and family was a big part of his life spending many years at Falcon Lake, Big Whiteshell Lake and Bird River. In 1982, Roger and Vicki built their dream Cottage at Buffalo Point where they spent a good portion of their retirement – making many beautiful memories. During his retirement, Roger and Vicki had the opportunity to travel to destinations such as Barbados, Europe, Texas, Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, and many other locations. Golf was a favorite activity for Roger and Vicki where they spent time together and with friends. In his retirement Roger continued to work part-time for Green Acres and continued his volunteer efforts with Siloam Mission until his illness would not allow him to continue. He also found time to sing in the church choir and was a member of St. Bernadette’s Parish in Windsor Park.
Roger was a true gentleman and was always willing to help family or friends when help was needed. He was the foundation of our family, and you could count on him to help with building projects, babysitting, driving to appointments, or anything else you could think of. He loved sports and could not get enough of watching his grandsons, and great grandchildren, play hockey, ringette, lacrosse, and baseball.
In keeping with Roger’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m., in the Green Acres Funeral Chapel, 1 Green Acres Lane, Navin, Manitoba. A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Meadow’s Retirement Home, Palliative Care, and Cancer Care Manitoba during the last leg of Roger’s cancer journey. They are all beautiful people!
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Siloam Mission, or Manitoba Cancer Care in memory of Roger.
