Stanley was predeceased by his parents Mike and Sadie Gerus and sadly brother Nickie Gerus.
Stanley was born in Sundown, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg in 1962. He was an active member of Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he faithfully served for many years by keeping financial records, preparing the hall for events, and maintaining the church grounds. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. Stanley loved hosting Easter dinners for his family, and as the family grew, he rented space at the church to continue this tradition. He enjoyed following sports and U.S. politics and was always ready for a good conversation.
Stanley’s first career began after attending Teacher’s College, where he lived in a cottage on campus – a time he fondly recalled as one of the highlights of his life. He taught for three years in one-room schoolhouses in southeastern Manitoba, dedicating himself to his students despite the challenges of teaching multiple grades. Though he loved teaching, the long hours led him to seek a new path.
At age 25, Stanley began a remarkable 40-year career with Canadian Pacific Railway, working in the department responsible for train derailments. His role required him to assess accident sites and coordinate cleanup efforts – a job he performed with diligence and integrity. Stanley often shared stories of early derailments involving grain and how local Hutterite communities would help with cleanup. He retired at age 65, proud of his record of never taking a sick day throughout his entire career.
Stanley’s life was marked by hard work, faith, and devotion to family and community. He stayed with his parents so that he could be available to their needs and faithfully care for them. He will be remembered for his generosity, his unwavering commitment, and his warm spirit.
Funeral service will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 390 Marion Street, on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with rosary starting at 9:30 a.m.
