With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Stephan Joshua Paterson, who left us far too soon on January 24, 2025, at the age of 29. Stephan was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, known for his upbeat energy, kindness, and the ability to make anyone laugh.
Born on January 3, 1996, Stephan spent his life between St. Claude and Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as parts of Alberta and Ontario. He was a dedicated father to his daughter, Marlowe Paterson, and a cherished son to Lisa Paterson and the late Gerry McNabb. He was also a loving brother to Lestat Paterson, Nisa Paterson, and the late Derrick McNabb, who was not just a brother but a lifelong protector, mentor, and father figure to Stephan.
A Passion for Music
Stephan’s love for music was more than a hobby—it was part of his soul. He could pick up a guitar and, within minutes, lose himself in the rhythm and melody, feeling every note with his entire being. Whether he was jamming with friends, strumming a tune by himself, or just talking about music, it was clear he had a deep, natural talent that went beyond the average player. He could hear things others couldn’t, transforming simple chords into something emotional and powerful. Music was not just something he did—it was a language he spoke fluently, a place where he felt most at home.
Stephan wasn’t just a musician; he was a performer. He played for and with his friends, creating unforgettable moments filled with laughter, song, and connection. Music brought him joy, and in turn, he used it to bring joy to others.
His Impact on Others
Stephan had a unique spirit—full of kindness, humor, and a deep compassion for others. He had a soft heart and always wished he could do more to help those in need. Even when he was struggling, he would drop everything to help a friend. His laughter was infectious, his energy was uplifting, and his presence made every room feel lighter. He had a rare gift of making people feel safe, valued, and heard.
His sense of humor was unmatched. Stephan could turn any ordinary moment into something hilarious, with perfect comedic timing and a knack for making people laugh until they cried. Whether it was a witty joke, a ridiculous impersonation, or just his natural charm, he made sure that no one around him ever felt down for too long.
A Brotherly Bond Like No Other
Derrick wasn’t just a brother to Stephan—he was his mentor, protector, and best friend from childhood through adulthood. Their connection was built on years of inside jokes, deep conversations, and an unspoken understanding of one another. They could communicate with a simple glance, and their laughter was contagious to anyone around them.
From a young age, Stephan looked up to Derrick, and Derrick took on the role of both brother and father figure. He was there for Stephan not only during his teenage and young adult years but also throughout most of his childhood. They shared a bond that no one could break, built on humor, love, and countless moments of brotherly mischief. Their jokes were effortless, their connection undeniable. Derrick guided Stephan through life’s highs and lows, shaping the man he became. The loss of Derrick was one of the hardest things Stephan ever had to endure, but their connection remained, unshaken by time or distance.
A Life Remembered
Though he never pursued a single career, Stephan worked many jobs, including house construction alongside his late brother Derrick, as well as other construction and labor work. But more than any job, his true impact was on the people in his life—bringing joy, laughter, and love wherever he went.
Stephan is survived by his mother, Lisa Paterson (Ward MacGregor); his brother, Lestat Paterson; his sister, Nisa Paterson; his daughter, Marlowe Paterson; his uncle, Scott McNabb; and his childhood best friend, Tyreese Cadotte. He was predeceased by his father, Gerry McNabb, and his brother, Derrick McNabb.
Though Stephan has left this world, his music, laughter, and spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His kindness, humor, and passion for life will never be forgotten.
Forever Loved. Forever Remembered.
