Albert Calloway Holmes Sr., affectionately known as "Al," passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, at the Veteran's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born in Miami, Florida, to Samuel Holmes and Clara Mae Johnson Holmes. Al’s legacy is one of love, service, and dedication to his family, country, and community.
A proud United States Army veteran, Al served with honor during two tours in Vietnam, enduring the trials of war as a former Prisoner of War. His military career spanned 15 years, and after returning from Vietnam, Al continued to serve his country through his work with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. His bravery and commitment to his country were evident throughout his life.
Al was a longtime member of the Yearlings Club in Louisville, Kentucky, an organization focused on community engagement and personal growth. He cherished the connections he made within the West End community, enjoying the club's exploration of diverse cultural experiences until illness hindered his ability to participate.
In addition to his community involvement, Al was a committed member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. He held the office of Post Commander of the VFW in Milwaukee during the 1990s and remained an active supporter of veterans’ causes throughout his life.
A man of deep faith and commitment, Al was a Mason for over 50 years. He was raised as a Prince Hall Mason in Kentucky but later demitted to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. As a member of King David Lodge #10, Al served as Past Master and went on to hold several significant positions within the Masonic community, including Grand Marshal, Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master, and Past Grand Master. He was also involved in numerous other Masonic bodies, such as the Holy Royal Arch, Knights Templar, and the Ionic Consistory #70 (Milwaukee), where he was a member of the James Gayles Class of 2002 (33rd degree). Additionally, Al served as the Honorary Past Potentate of Zembo #70 and an Associate Member of Tyre Temple #129 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He was also a devoted member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Past Patron of Princess Ellah Chapter #1 (Milwaukee) and Past Grand Worthy Patron of Unity Chapter OES PHA Wisconsin from 2000 to 2003.
Al’s commitment to his faith was equally evident in his role at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville, where he was a parishioner for 16 years. He was actively involved in the church, serving on the parish council for three years, as a Eucharistic minister, a server, a host, and a member of the Bishop Flaget Society. His love for God and his church family was a central part of his life.
Outside of his many commitments, Al found joy in spending time with his family, traveling, and watching movies. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren, and he was always eager to offer them his wisdom, support, and love.
Albert leaves behind his beloved wife, Laurine, his daughters, Annie Jureal Holmes, Flecia Renay Holmes, and Mattie Smith (Guy), and his son, Albert C. Holmes Jr. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Desmond Tyrone Holmes, Guy Smith Jr., Aloncia Holmes, Tre'veon Smith (Alaliyah), and Guneshia Smith, as well as his great-grandchildren, Tre'veon, Tyler, Giovanni, Gabrielle, Taylor, and Torian Smith. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Doris Ann Brewer (Darrin), niece Jessica Knight (Brad), nephew Daniel Brewer (Caroline), and grandnieces Stella Knight and Amari Brewer, as well as grandnephew Luka Knight.
Albert’s life was one of service, love, and devotion. He touched the hearts of all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the countless lives he impacted. His legacy of faith, courage, and compassion will continue to inspire his family and the communities he served. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
