Obituary of Doris Jean (Franklin) Holmes
Doris Jean (Franklin) Holmes, 89 years of age, was born July 2, 1929 on her grandparents' farm in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana to the late Coy Lovell Franklin and Della Virginia (Mast) Franklin. She was the widow of Robert Lee Holmes (deceased 2000). Doris married Bob Holmes in 1950, and they moved to New Albany, Indiana where they raised two children and lived for more than 50 years. Doris was active in local politics and in many civic and philanthropic organizations. She was a past executive committee member of the Southeastern Indiana Goodwill Rehabilitation Center (now Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana), past President of the Floyd County United Charities Board, past President of the Coterie Literary Club, a past member of Tri Kappa Associates, a past "Friend" of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, a past supporter of the Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation Area, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. For many years, Doris was employed by both the New Albany City and Floyd County departments of recycling and solid waste offices where she served as the Office Manager for the city and in her "retirement" as an assistant to the head of the county department. She is survived by her two daughters, Laurie Holmes Streib (George) of New Albany and Kim A. Holmes (Joel Bonder) of Washington, DC; four grandchildren, Abigail Bonder Bluestone (Zack) and Joseph A. Bonder (Mae) of Washington, DC and Jacob Streib and Hallie Streib both of New Albany. In addition, she is survived by three great grandchildren, Leena and Violet Bluestone and Andrew Bonder of Washington, DC and her nephew, Ronald Franklin of Evansville. A Memorial Reception will be held on Saturday, June 15 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. A Life Celebration follows at 3:00 pm at the Kraft Chapel.
