Melvin "Smitty" Paul Smith, 80, of Palmyra, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. Melvin was born in Seymour, Indiana on March 16, 1944 to the late Hugh J. Smith and Gennell Gootee Smith. He was a 21 year veteran in the United States Army and Navy. Smitty was a member of Church on the Rock and the American Legion 335.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Tom Smith and a sister, Janet Sparks.
Smitty is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan R. Smith; sisters, Nancy Hellmueller (Louie) and Phyllis Kaelin; children, Christy, Angie, Amy, Lora and James (Miranda); nine grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana 47150, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM with private burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
