Armindo O. de Melo

Armindo O. de Melo, a beloved and devoted resident of New Bedford passed away on May 5, 2025, at the age of 93. He was the cherished husband of the late Maria V. de Melo with whom he shared 72 years of marriage.

Born on February 8, 1932, in Ponta Delgada, St. Michael, Armindo was the son of the late Antonio and Catarina de Melo. At the age of 19, he married and traveled to Brazil on his honeymoon where he decided to start his new life and have his four daughters. In 1968, he moved to New Bedford, MA.

Mr. de Melo worked at Calvin Clothing until his retirement. Armindo loved his family dearly and found joy in dancing with the love of his life, Maria. He enjoyed dining at his favorite restaurant, Captain's Place every Saturday, savoring a good cocktail, traveling, singing, and tending to his vegetable garden. The most important thing to him was being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a thoughtful father to Veneranda Vasconcelos of New Bedford, Elizabeth Pell and her deceased husband Fred Pell of Fairhaven, Cidalia de Melo of Somerville, and Marcia Amaral and her husband Oscar of New Bedford. He cherished his eight grandchildren: Jason Vasconcelos, Tracy Ferreira, Joshua Pell, Jonathan Pell, Jennifer Murphy, Dylan Amaral, Jessica Valentin, and Chad Picard; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the grandfather of the late Cody Amaral. Armindo is survived by his sisters, Ines and Alda, and was predeceased by his siblings, Virginia Melo and Eduardo de Melo.

We would like to acknowledge the loving care from all the aids provided to our Mom and Dad throughout their medical needs. We are forever grateful.

Visitation will be held at Rock Funeral Home, located at 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, MA, on May 12, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will take place at the same venue on May 13, 2025, starting at 9:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1359 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford, Massachusetts, at 10:00 am.
