Darrell W. Monteiro, 64 of New Bedford, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Boston Medical Center after a lengthy battle with illness. Despite the challenges he faced, he showed his strength and courage every day with a smile that could brighten a room.
Born July 5th 1957 in New Bedford, MA, Darrell was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1975. He was employed as a New Bedford Police officer for many years. Upon his retirement, he worked as a security officer for more than 20 years.
Darrell’s love of life defined who he was and overflowed for his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed cruising in his pride and joy, his 1971 Corvette. Darrell would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need and was a loving man who cared more for others than he did himself. He enjoyed raising Dobermans and coaching baseball and soccer. He never missed any of his kids’ sports games or extra-curriculars. Darrell was never short on jokes, and his infectious laugh brought joy to everyone he met. He was fast to remind even the Dunkin drive through girls to smile. Though Darrell claimed his spirit character was “Grumpy” from Disney’s Snow White, for those who knew him, he was the embodiment of joy, love, and laughter. He will be forever missed.
Darrell was the son of the late Moses and Jenny (Pina) Monteiro. He is survived by his children, Tiara Normandin and her husband Tony Pereira of New Bedford, MA, Leslie Monteiro of New Bedford, MA, Kenneth Monteiro and his wife Amanda of San Antonio, TX and David Monteiro of Worcester, MA; his grandchildren, Christian Almeida, Kayden Monteiro, Adriana Pereira, Landon Monteiro and Aliyah Console; his siblings, Judy Monteiro of Georgia, Nancy Silvia of Fall River, MA and Valerie Monteiro and her husband John of South Carolina; his former wives, Ann Monteiro and Anne Marie Monteiro both of New Bedford, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation and celebration of life for Darrell will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00PM at the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial is private. To leave a note of condolence: www.rock-funeralhome.com
