Eleanor M. (Florio) Charbonneau, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 12, 2026. She was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Garcia) Florio, and the wife of the late Matthew Charbonneau.
Born and raised in New Bedford, she graduated from Holy Family High School and began a career in banking, eventually finishing her career as an Asst Branch Manager at St. Anne’s Credit Union. She and Matt moved to Acushnet shortly after they were married and raised their family there. They were active parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Church while the Sacred Heart fathers were there and very involved with fundraising at St. Francis Xavier School.
Ellie was a woman of strong faith, and strong convictions. She had a great devotion to St. Anthony and was very involved with the Sacred Heart Congregation for many years. She loved New England sports, especially the Red Sox, and her Super Bowl parties – whether the Patriots were in it or not – will be something her family will never forget. Ellie loved to travel and was blessed to visit places all over the world with Matt and return to her favorite destinations – Hawaii and Rome – with friends and family after his passing. She loved sharing the places she loved, and she planned itineraries like a professional.
More than anything, Ellie loved her family. She was happiest hosting dinner on Sunday nights, and when everyone was gathered around the increasingly numerous tables for Thanksgiving and Easter. She took great pride in planning the meal, setting a beautiful table and buying enough food to easily feed double the amount of people coming, but mostly it was about having all her family around her.
She is survived by her daughter Bethanie and her husband Michael, her son Luke and his wife Sue, her daughter Kathie and her husband Ed, and her son Jay and his wife Renee. She loved being Gram to Sarah, Hannah, Ben, Jack, Kaleigh, Reed, Connor, Jenna, Jared, Jesse, Savannah, LV, Matt, Joe and Brooklyn, and GG to Avery, Olivia and Reis. Her pride in, and love for her grandkids and great grandkids was always evident. She also leaves her dear cousin, Margaret Domingos, and her best friend Raeanne Lavoie.
Her funeral Mass will take place at St. Mary’s in Fairhaven on Saturday, January 31st at 10am. Calling hours are omitted in accordance with her wishes. Burial will be private.
