"Our incomparable mother Adrian “Kaye” Gray, 89, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2025. She was born April 7, 1936, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late William Frank and Nena Belle Bennett. Mom lived a life full of adventures, from travels with her diplomat father in South America, Asia and other international locales to study at Florida State University where she met her first husband Donald Neil Gray. Married life started in California where she had two children, Douglas and Kristy. Her career as a court reporter/stenographer led her to a leading position in Monterey County serving the Superior court. She then enhanced her expertise and attended the only school that specialized in the latest technology in stenography in Maryland. Her career blossomed as she set up residence in Naples, Florida where she remained until retiring to New Bern. As a court reporter, she could type up to 250 words a minute. Her zest for life was evident in every adventure she embarked upon including trips to Australia, Hawaii and Venezuela. She enjoyed skiing, hiking, boating and other outdoor activities. She had boundless energy and love that enriched the lives of all who knew her. One of her greatest endeavors was buying and living on a 42-foot houseboat. She was undoubtably the captain of the boat and a great marine mechanic. She was passionate about working with her hands sewing, knitting, crocheting, decoupage, macrame, stain glass work and quilting. One of her favorite quotes was “Always eat dessert first”. She loved to feast on Dungeness crab, blue crabs and lobster.
She was a great Mom for not having a manual. Leaving behind to honor and cherish her memories are her two children, son Douglas Gray (spouse Montse); daughter, Kristy Hartwig (spouse John); two grandchildren, Andre and Gabriella Gray; and many loving family members and close friends.
Kaye was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Neil Gray, and sister, Louise “Weezie” Valsi.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Riverpoint Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their professional care, thoughtfulness, and expertise in looking after our mother. Many nurses and aides looked after her over the six years of her residency, however two were her primary caregivers, we want to recognize Nurse Donna and personal CNA, Penny. They truly cared and loved our mom among others. And to the Cardinal Hospice team who stepped in as needed and provided extra hands, care, communication and prayer, were the best.
To honor Kaye’s wishes, no formal services will be held.
Cotton Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Adrian “Kaye” Gray."
