She was born in Craven County to the late Foy Richard Morton and Delma Louise Moore Morton on May 9, 1932. She was preceded in death by her parents, the love of her life, Royce Clayton Moore, Jr. and son Edward Morton Moore.
Betty spent her early life in the farming communities of Chocowinity and Washington, North Carolina. She later moved to Vanceboro, NC where she graduated from Farm Life High School. After graduation, Betty attended King’s Business College in Charlotte, NC.
Returning to the New Bern area, she worked with Maola Milk and Ice Cream Company, Mr. H.J. McDonald as secretary for New Bern City Schools and later made a career as a legal secretary for Mr. Cecil D. May.
Her passion in life was being outdoors. She loved fishing and crabbing at Dawson Creek, growing bountiful crops of vegetables in her garden and beautiful flowers around her home. She truly had a green thumb. She was an avid animal lover, especially dogs and horses. She and her husband had a farm where they raised chickens, cows, and children.
She enjoyed doing things with her family such as camping, horse shows and taking family girl trips to Savannah, GA, Nashville, TN and various amusement parks. In her healthier days, she loved riding to “Little Washington” with her best friend and partner in crime, Katherine May, to eat Bill’s Hot Dogs on the waterfront.
She served as Worthy Matron of Craven Chapter #129, Order of the Eastern Star and recently received her 50 year membership pin. She was a long time member of Beech Grove Methodist Church.
She is survived by her two daughters Cindy Jones (Ricky), Susan Baty (Chip), son Rusty Moore (Pauline), grandchildren Joshua Jones (Mary), Kaitlyn Moore (Madison) Jaime Donham (Kyle), Clay Moore, and Sara Peele (Zach), great grand children Jacob and Eli Jones, Evelyn and Courtland Donham, Jayce, Ainsleigh and Brynleigh Moore, Brady and Sadie Peele, and Eleanor and Everett Moore-Hissom. She is also survived by a sister, Rebecca Bender (Bryan).
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Beech Grove Methodist Church Building Fund, 405 Parker Road, New Bern, NC 28562.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank Kacie, Gloria, Shyla and Kirsten with Liberty Hospice as well as Debra Marshburn for their love and care of our mother during a very difficult time.
