Sgt. Maj. Clifton "Clif" Bowman, Ret. USMC, age 80, of New Bern, went home to be with his Lord with his family by his side on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Clif proudly served his country, the United States of America, for 26 years and worked hard to earn his title as Sgt. Maj. Not only did he serve his country, Clif served his community well. During his free time, Clif enjoyed riding his motorcycles, gardening, and fishing. He was known by his son as "Mr. Fix-It". Clif was a man of few words, but everyone listened to his wisdom when he spoke. All who knew Clif will miss him greatly, especially his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Lillie Bowman; son, Tim Bowman; brother, Charles Bowman; sisters, Arlene Turner (Willis), Joyce Bowman, Evelyn Penn, Mary R. Bowman, and Dorothy Brooks; sister-in-law, Mary S. Bowman; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Laura Bowman; and brother, James Bowman.

A Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 PM on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Cotten Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at 3:00 PM with Pastor Dennis T. Walston. I worked with Cliff at FRCE.
He was surly and grumpy on the outside, but this was a facade he used to hide his heart of gold.

I miss him already

SgtMaj Bowman was a Marine's Marine, Sharp, Knowledgeable, helpful, had few words but lots of action. We met him at the 2007 Black Marine Reunion in Las Vegas and we have inseparable ever since. There is none like him. He's the last of that good stock. Clift and Lillie are family. Clift will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He reported in the sgt of the guard in heaven and was immediately given the task of keeping things around those pearly gates in order
I miss Clift. He was my FRIEND.

I want to express my sincere condolence to Lillie Mae, and to the entire Bowman family.
Cliff was a true friend, and whenever I needed him he was always there. I appreciated him as my friend, it was a great pleasure to know Cliff.
He was such an honorable man and would help whomever he could, and didn't expect anything in return.
I will miss my friend, and I know Cliff will truly be missed by all who knew him.
God bless the Bowman Family.
