

Don was a United States Marine Corp veteran with 20 years of service. He was posted in the military police and criminal investigative divisions. He was a member of Grey Ghost VMFA-531 squadron. He was a member of the local FRA in Havelock. After retirement he continued his work on the base at Cherry Point as a civil servant. Don was the chief of police for the City of Havelock in the 1970’s. Don also served as President of the City of Havelock’s Appearance Committee from 1996-2003.
He was a former Havelock High School Athletic Booster Club President. He was an avid bowler for more than 50 years and was inducted in the Carteret/Craven-Men’s bowling Hall of Fame in 2008.
Don was active in the First United Methodist Church of Havelock. He took up knitting during that time and knitted over 350 caps for chemotherapy patients.
He is survived by his wife Betty, two daughters, Liz Cox and Mona Wiles (Abe), two brothers James (Peggie) and David, two granddaughters Stephanie Golding (Chris) and Victoria Cox. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
A Celebration of Don's Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Havelock. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.
Recently Don was a member of the Brookdale of Morehead City Clare Bridge Memory Care Community. The family thanks the caring staff for the constant, compassionate care of Don over the past 15 months.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
