Everette was born on the Carpenter family homestead near Peachland in Anson County, NC on 3 June 1922, son of Kizzie Myra Caudle and Robert Ray Carpenter. His father operated a sawmill in NC and SC before losing the business during the Depression. After graduating from high school, he along with several of his brothers and cousins moved to Baltimore, MD to work in the shipyards. Upon the outbreak of World War II he was drafted and joined the Navy and served in the Pacific until the end of hostilities. Upon his return to Anson County, the family farmed until they relocated to Clarks, Craven County where they operated a sawmill and eventually turned to logging.
Everette met his future wife Maxine Stevenson, while living in Clarks, NC. He told his siblings he was going to marry that "pretty red-haired girl down the road." They were married on 8 August 1948 and raised four children. Maxine preceded him in death on 26 June 2015.
Everette was a hard working man. For many years he and his brothers owned and operated H. M. Carpenter Lumber Company which has passed on to his son and is now J. E. Carpenter Logging Company. Maxine and Everette's home garden was the source for most of their vegetables and were enjoyed year round. They became avid fishermen and spent many a day at their fishing home near Oriental. At one time they had four freezers to hold all their vegetables and seafood. No one ever went hungry in the Carpenter home.
Everette was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Virginia Turner, Boyce Carpenter, Letchie Carpenter, and Harrell Carpenter.
