Born on October 15, 1938, to Catherine and Fred Wagner, Fred was raised in Rocky River, Ohio, alongside his younger brother, Donald (JoAnn). He attended Rocky River High School, where he was an active student-athlete, playing varsity football and competing in track.
Fred went on to attend Ohio University, where he earned a degree in accounting and formed lifelong friendships through his involvement with the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. It was there he met the love of his life, Annette Luse. The two shared a devoted marriage of 65 years and built a life centered on family, friendship, and shared adventure.
Following graduation, Fred began a successful 30-year management career with Union Carbide. He and Annette made their home in North Olmsted, Ohio, before relocating to several communities over the years, including Greenville, North Carolina; Bay Village, Ohio; and Katonah, New York. In each place, Fred cultivated lasting friendships and a strong sense of community.
Fred had a passion for golf, particularly at Brook Valley Country Club, and was an enthusiastic supporter of East Carolina University athletics, especially Pirates football. He also had a deep love for aviation, earning his IFR pilot certification and flying his family on memorable trips to destinations such as the Grand Canyon and Jekyll Island.
In retirement, Fred and Annette returned to North Carolina, settling first in Greenville and later in New Bern, where they became active members of the Fairfield Harbor community. Fred embraced new interests, including boating, and proudly served as an Auxiliary Coast Guard Commander in New Bern. He also dedicated himself to classic car restoration, serving as President of the First Capital Antique Car Club and contributing to the annual New Bern Antique Car Show.
Fred and Annette enjoyed traveling both across the United States and abroad, and he cherished time spent with family, especially holidays at Fripp Island, South Carolina. Known for his mischievous sense of humor, Fred delighted those around him with his laughter, as well as his fondness for beer and spaghetti with meatballs.
Fred will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Annette; his daughters, Lorri Albrecht Reid, Denise Dutton (Bryant Davies), and Sheryl Schnell (James Schnell); and his cherished grandchildren, Alanna Albrecht, Caroline Flowers (Henry), Erin Schnell, and William Schnell, whose accomplishments brought him great pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and his sons-in-law, Bruce Dutton and Kevin Reid.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at McCarthy Court for their compassionate care and support in helping Fred and Annette feel comfortable in their new home.
Fred’s warmth, laughter, and enduring love for his family and friends will be remembered always.
