As the famous poem says, “On the eighth day, God made a farmer” to care for the land He created, and on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 God called this farmer, Guy Monroe Arthur Jr, home to reap his harvest in the perfect fields of Glory Land.
Guy is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Doris Adams Arthur; his sons Randy (Elizabeth, 2 children, 2 step-children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 step-grandchildren) of New Bern, David (Deanna, and 1 child) of Bellingham, WA, Steven (Jessica, and 2 children) of New Bern, and Bryan (Lacey, and 2 children) of New Bern; brother James B. “Jimmy” (Peggy) of New Bern; and many close nieces and nephews.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Sr. and Lillian Creech Arthur, wife Teresa Buck Arthur, sister Thelma “Toot” Arthur Phillips, brother William “Bud” Arthur, sister Guyola “Sis” Arthur Hall, brother John Arthur, sister Janice Arthur Booth, brother Robert C. “Toby” Arthur, and sister Jo Arthur Dixon.
He was born November 14, 1939 in New Bern, NC and proudly farmed his entire life. He owned Arthur Farms with his best friend, business partner, and brother, Jimmy, for over 50 years until Jimmy’s retirement, and shared it with his son Steven thereafter. There were few days Guy and Jimmy didn’t spend together. He firmly believed in faith, family, and farming as a member of Antioch Freewill Baptist Church, the Jones County Cotton Gin Board, and the revered patriarch of his family. Through his many years of farming he received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1968 and the Craven County Corn Production Service Award in 1984.
Guy was well-known to be a hard-working but gentle man, as he loved everything about farming and his grandbabies. In his spare time he enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets collecting antiques, clocks, and oil lamps. He enjoyed vacationing in the mountains in the fall and traveling to gun shows to setup booths for trading up his firearms collection. He was a quiet man of few words, but when he spoke people listened and every word was that much more worth listening to. He loved listening to good bluegrass music, watching the families of his “down the creek” friends grow, and spending Sunday evenings after church at Hwy 55 fellowshipping with his “Sunday Night Crew” friends.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at Cotten Funeral Home, followed by a service at 3 p.m. in the Chapel with Craig Hearne and Michael Crocker officiating. He will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park. Online condolences may be offered to the family by visiting www.cottenfuneralhome.com.
The Arthur Family would like to thank their family, friends, and church family for the prayers, support, and love shown during their time of need. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Craven County Hospice (checks payable to Craven County Health Dpt Foundation PO Drawer 12610 New Bern, NC 28561) or your charity of choice.
Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home.
