

NEW BERN Jeannine Wilkins Merrell, 85, died Friday, January 23, 2015 at the home of her daughter, Marilyn, after an extended decline due to dementia. She was born in Norfolk, VA, on May 28, 1929 to Joseph Daniel and Neva Swain Wilkins. She grew up in Currituck County and was married in 1947 to Calvin Curtis Merrell. The family moved to New Bern in 1965. She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years (1996) and a sister, Susie Guye Wilkins (1994).
Jeannine is survived by seven children: Marilyn Boyd and husband Jim, Brenda Laughinghouse and husband Kenneth, Debra Pless and husband Mike from Waterlily, Cindy Garrett, Neva Elks and husband Mike from Grimesland, Calvin Curtis Merrell, Jr., and Lessie Lonstad.
She was a doting grandmother to seven grandchildren: Kenny Laughinghouse, Jeannine Haddock, Nikki Weber, Taylor Pless, Ryan Pless, Tyler Garrett, and Curt Elks.
Adding to her joy were five great-grandchildren: Luke and Lily Laughinghouse, Hunter Haddock, Summer and Ryder Weber.
She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Garrenton, of Barco, NC.
Mrs. Merrell attended Tabernacle Baptist Church and developed many friendships. She enjoyed singing in the Joy Choir and participating in Sunday School class activities. She was a sweet Christian lady whose love of life radiated to everyone around her. She adored babies and young children and became an instant friend to anyone needing assistance. Mrs. Merrell was a devoted wife, mother and Nana, and a dear friend to all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Cotten Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 27, beginning at 2:00 with the memorial service starting at 3:00. A short burial service will take place at Greenleaf Memorial Park in the Lakeside Chapel Pavilion.
