Josephus Jacobus Herman Paulus Muffels

Jos and affectionately known as “Grunkle Jos” or “Jossie” to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, lived a life marked by passion, ingenuity, and a deep love for his wife Diana, his family, and certainly adventure. Born on April 5, 1953 in the Netherlands, he embraced every moment of his journey with unwavering courage and enthusiasm for life.

Jos's adventurous spirit found expression through his love for tinkering, sailing and boating. He found solace and joy in the open waters, where he spent time navigating the seas. His passion for exploration extended beyond the shores, as he worked and traveled far and wide, enriching his life with diverse experiences and cultures. In fact, it was in Bangladesh that he met and married his wife Diana, the love of his life.

A man of remarkable talent, Jos was an accomplished engineer. He dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge, constantly seeking innovative solutions. His contributions to the field of engineering, such as his work on the Potomac Bridge, the Washington Convention Center and the Extension of the Metro system in Washington DC are a testament to his brilliance and dedication.

Among Jos's greatest joys was the creation and expansion of his coastal Pamlico home, where he poured his heart and soul into every detail. His vision and craftsmanship transformed the house into a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where he and Diana welcomed family and friends as they gathered to create countless cherished memories.

Jos's legacy of love, generosity, wonderful sense of humor and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Dr. Diana R. Silimperi-Muffels, his sisters, Ted(die), Marie -Josée and Jacqueline, and his in-laws. On both sides of the ocean his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends will forever know his name and the story he wrote including them all.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Caring House (Durham, NC), National Kidney Foundation, ECU Health Foundation: Transplant Program, in honor of Jos's memory.

A celebration of Jos's life will be held in Pamlico county on May 19th, in York, PA, and in the Netherlands. Condolence visitation with Diana: April 10-13 between 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm at her home.
