I just stumbled upon this obituary and I am so saddened to hear about Mr. Hannigans death. Mr. Hannigan was my history teacher at Holy Trinity. He also taught both of my older sisters at Holy Spirit. I will never forget his O.T.D’s and all of the history that would “wash up on the beach”. He taught us so much about history and the history of music. He was truly one of a kind that will be dearly missed. Rest In Peace.

I taught with Larry at Holy Spirit/Holy Trinity school for many years . He was the most liked and remembered History Teacher I have ever known. He never raised his voice and never failed to deliver on a promise. A true gentle man and wonderful example at all times. I’m sorry l failed to keep up with his whereabouts and was stunned to see his death notice in our Enquirer one morning recently.He was one of the most creative teachers l have ever known . His love of history, antiques ,History ,and his students was evident to all ,but more than anything his love for his high school sweetheart,Shirley was undeniable!

A loving Uncle with a infectious smile.  His sense of humor and generous heart will be missed.

Larry was my freshman college roommate as well as one of my roommates in senior year. We celebrated our 50th with Xavier buddies and wives last November. It was great, though there were four of us already gone. We were planning another get together. Time goes too fast. Celebrate when you can!
In an email exchange with our friend Dan O'Malia, this week, Dan said Larry was the most loved among us. While that remark surprised me at first, after I thought about it, the surprise turned into, "Of course!"  It allowed me to reflect on Larry, who he really was and why we did love and come to appreciate him.
Before Dan's remark, Larry was, well, Larry, our friend. He had a down-home accent and a very funky sense of humor. His jokes made one stop, shake your head and ask, "What did you say?" Then we'd all start guffawing. We just knew Larry said funny stuff even if we couldn't understand it. 
What makes us love Larry is he Was different, but not in a pejorative way. Larry was different because, unlike too many others, or myself I do confess, he never said anything to hurt anybody. He never tried to ridicule anyone. He was not mean-spirited. He was gentle. He was kind. He was complimentary. He inquired of you. He spoke his opinions, but he never fought. (Except, Larry, know this, The Beatles ARE better than The Four Seasons)!
Importantly, he never needed to Be anything. He didn't need to compare himself or mimic anyone else or be anyone other than who he was! He didn't need to dress up or show off. He was Larry and that was enough. His lovely wife Shirley, also our dear friend of 50+ years, saw it early in high school, knew it, and loved him for it. Would that more of us had Larry's style.
His aspirations seemed simple enough too. Work. Pray. Be loyal. Be a good teacher, guidance counselor. He didn't need titles, a major salary, an office. He just was. He was a Good man. A good friend. In that way, he was/is an example for a good life well lived. 
What else does God ask of us?

Mr. Hannigan was my 7th and 8th grade teacher at St. Peter and Paul School in Norwood , Ohio. I think we were probably his first class to teach after graduating from Xavier. We were not an easy class to handle!! 31 students , 11 boys and 20 girls and very typical middle school attitudes.  Of course none of us realized how lucky we were to have such caring and compassionate teachers  . Mr. Hannigan made a difference and all of our class went on to become good hard working parents and community minded citizens. I am sure he touched many peoples lives throughout his teaching career and I am certain he is in heaven along with all the other middle school teachers/heroes. He was always excited to share with me the things that "washed up on the beach" in his classroom.  I was honored when he allowed me to bring some things of mine to share with his students.

Dear Shirley, I am so sorry to learn of the death of your dear husband, Larry.  I know that you two had a long and beautiful marriage, but he is gone too soon.

He was the steady person who enjoyed life and could always be counted on by his family.  He is dearly missed.   

When I was in middle school at Holy Trinity in Newport, KY, I was fortunate to have Mr. Hannigan as my social studies teacher. He epitomized what it means to be a teacher - he not only helped students understand the complexities of the history, but he also deeply cared about his students. He had such a positive impact on hundreds of students, including myself. Mr. H was one of the best teachers that I have ever had, and he was truly an amazing and phenomenal person.  My condolences go out to Mr. H's family and friends during this heartbreaking time. 

Mr. Hannigan will always be the teacher that students speak of fondly because  simply put he was amazing. He not only taught us history but the importance of knowing what was going on in the current world. The facts mattered but feeling the effects of how it impacted today was of more importance. He will always be considered my favorite teacher. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. 

As a former student of Mr Hannigan, I can say with the utmost confidence that the impact this man had on the direction I took in life cannot be exaggerated. My love of history and travel were all and still are inspired by him. I will never take a trip, watch a movie or read a book without  "looking beyond the surface of historical events." Truly a wonderful and inspiring human being that the world is less better for not having any more. My sincerest condolences to the family. You've one of the greatest people to grace the planet. 

Of all the teachers I have had in my life Mr. Hannigan was by far the most memorable and impactful. He was a kind man who cared about his students and their dreams. His love for antiques and music sparked a passion in my 11 year old self that never went away! I still have, and put up, the Christmas ornament he gave me in the 6th grade and think of him every time I see a 3 musketeers bar! He will be greatly missed and never forgotten! 

Although I only had a year to get to know him at Holy Trinity Junior High, Mr. Hannigan has changed me for life. We bonded over our love of history. Everything and everyone has a story; everything and everyone matters. He taught me that, as he taught so many others. Rest in peace, Mr. H. Prayers for you and your family. May we meet again one day. 

Mr. Hannigan was an amazing teacher. Very few teachers impacted me as much as he did. I still think about our conversations about classic cars ( Pontiac LeMans in particular), classic rock, different antiques, and many other fond memories. 

He will be sorely missed.

I had the pleasure of having him as a teacher in junior high school. He would bring in one of his collectibles or antiques once a week and give us clues to guess what it was. Looking back he honestly taught me how to take good notes.  Sending my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Hannigan seriously the best teacher! He took the time out of his day to make sure everything was ok in each of his students life. He was my favorite teacher and the reason I went to school for history! You will greatly missed!

I'm a Holy Spirit/Trinity alum and without a doubt, Mr. Hannigan was the most influential teachers I had from Kindergarten through my Masters. He was one of the inspirations for becoming a teacher myself and I find myself quoting his life lessons in my classes often. I had him as a teacher in a pretty rough time of my life and he was instrumental in helping me get through it. My sincerest condolences to the family...the world has lost as amazing man.

I had the privilege of working with Larry at Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity Schools in Newport, KY. He blessed students, parents and staff members by his love of learning and sense of humor and adventure! My sympathy and prayers for Shirley and the rest of his family. 🙏🏻

Great memories from our days at Sandusky St. Mary's Central Catholic High School!  A great friend who will be missed by so many.

I am so sorry to hear about Larry.  I remember fondly stories of his love of teaching and running. You and your families are in my prayers.

Larry meant so much to Vicki, me and our children.  His personality always drew you in....mostly because of his smile.  He always was thinking about what he could do for others, which displayed his generous spirit.  When he told stories, his ability to laugh as he told them always made me laugh with him.  He will forever hold a special place in my family's heart.  I will miss him terribly.

Rest in peace Uncle Larry.  We will miss your generous heart and quick wit.  You always went the extra mile to make life enjoyable for those around you.
