Leland Douglas Edwards

He was 90 years old.Doug was born on June 5, 1923 in Maxton, NC and grew up in Columbus County. He was the son of the late James Stacy and Ophelia C. Edwards of Whiteville. After winning a childhood battle with polio, he became a private pilot and embarked upon a lifelong affinity with airplanes and flying. He was a dedicated, long-time member of the Civil Air Patrol. Along the way, he mentored and instilled the love of flight into countless area young people, many of whom went on to pursue careers in aviation.He retired in 1986 from the Seashore Transportation Company after a distinguished career of over 40 years. He was treasurer of Grantham Masonic Lodge #725 for 42 years. He was also a member of West New Bern Presbyterian Church.

Doug was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Marion Brown Edwards.

He is survived by his long-time companion Tillie Jones of New Bern, his brother Alton and wife Janice Edwards of Riegelwood, NC, and several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern. The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to West New Bern Presbyterian Church, 1701 Lucerne Way, New Bern NC 28560 or a charity of one's choice
