Lena Elizabeth Harris

Lena Elizabeth Harris, 78, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 8, 2022. Favorably known as Ms. Lib, she was born on August 29, 1943, to Leroy and Hilda Piner of New Bern. Lib was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Lib’s true passion was found in the classroom where she sought to help young minds build foundations fit for lifelong interests and pursuits.

Believing in the value of education, Lib continually improved her ability to guide young minds of the community. She attended East Carolina Teachers College and later attained her Masters in Education from East Carolina University. Lib was always in search of ways to improve the educational experiences of those she taught. Ultimately, Lib was the first teacher in the Craven County school system to obtain the National Board Certification. She further served as coach and proctor for those seeking their National Board Certification as well.

Lib was married to W.L. “Bill” Harris, Jr., of New Bern, for 56 years. They were married at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern on July 18, 1965. Together they enjoyed worldly travels, boating, paddle boarding, and family gatherings. Lib was preceded in death by her daughter, Charlotte Harris Cavoores. She is survived by (grandson), Zachary Michael Cavoores, (son), John Michael Harris, (daughter in law), Grae Holloman Harris, (grandson), Gavin Michael Harris, (brother and sister in law), OV and Betty Rowe, and several cousins, nieces and a nephew.

Ms. Lib’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts and minds of her student’s, peers and everyone who interacted with her, as well as, those who she reached but never met. A Memorial Garden graveside service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, NC, on Friday, 15 April 2022 at 11:00, with a reception afterwards in the Session House.
