

Leonard A. Long (Len,) was born in Richmond, Virginia at Retreat Hospital. He was the oldest of four children to Lauretta and Robert Andrew Long. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Dauphne and four sons Leonard (Tony), Paul, Timothy, and Jonathan. He is also survived by his sisters Virginia Clifton, Kristeen McLamb, and brother David Long.
He graduated John Marshall High School and entered the United States Marine Corps Reserve in March 1953 on a delayed entry training program. His enlisted fields included combat engineer, truck mechanic, radio technician, and radio engineer. He started his career as a Private and was commissioned a Chief Warrant Officer in September 1966. In 1971 he was commissioned as an LDO 1st Lieutenant and was promoted to LDO Major in 1979. Major Long retired in 1985.
His awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 silver and 2 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, RVNC Ribbon Bar w/device, Navy Achievement Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation Civil Action Colors First Class Citation, Navy Unit Citation, M-14 Expert Rifle Badge, .45 Pistol Sharpshooter.
He was honored in 1970 with the President’s Outstanding Young Men of America Award.
Len spent his entire life in service to the youth of America through active involvement in the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. He held numerous positions and received uncounted awards including the Silver Beaver Award, Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow Croatan Lodge, Eagle Class of 2010 Honoree, Cubmaster Award of Merit, Lamb Award, and Whitney M. Young Award. His contributions to Scouting spanned Woodbadge, Philmont, unit, district, and council level service, Order of the Arrow, Learning for Life, the National Jamboree Staff. His service to youth spanned the globe as he engaged in service.
Len was a past President of the New Bern Civitans, a lifetime NRA member, Master Gardener, American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Gideons. He was a Master Electrician and taught at Craven and Pamlico Community Colleges.
Len also devoted his life to service to the church. He was a long-time Lutheran engaged in church service spanning the globe. From ushers, building maintenance, Sunday school, vacation bible school, men’s groups, church council, and more he always took the task and did God’s work. He will be greatly missed by all.
