Born October 6, 1936, in Sampson County N.C., Tom realized the value of hard work at a young age, and carried this principle throughout his life.
In 1955, Tom embarked upon a 30-year adventure with the United States Marine Corps. He began his military career as an enlisted aviation ordnance technician, and after attaining the rank of gunnery sergeant in 1968, was commissioned as a second lieutenant while serving in Vietnam. Tom had a love of country like no other, and although he retired in 1985 as a major, the joy of the camaraderie he shared and the pride he held for his fellow Marines carried on in stories and charitable deeds for the rest of his life.
Not one to stay idle, Tom embarked upon a second career as an insurance broker and agent just months after his military retirement. He eventually opened Awake Insurance Agency of Havelock, which he proudly operated until 2004, when he retired to play golf and tinker around in his workshop.
