He served his country for 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and he retired from civil service. Melvin was a lifetime member of the VFW of Havelock and he was employed with the City of Havelock. He was a former assistant coach for the Havelock High School softball team.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Branch Hines, his daughter, Bridgette L. Hines Uvalle and husband Marcos Uvalle of Greenville; and one surviving sister, Jeanette Rivers of Reading, MA.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, March 19, 2012 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock, NC. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Cotten Funeral Home.
