Robert Matthew Callinan

Robert M. Callinan, 85, of New Bern, NC died peacefully in his own home under the care of Craven County Hospice on June 12, 2023.

During his lifetime, he served with the US Air Force. He was employed for over 40 years with the US Postal Service rising to postmaster of Rumson, then Long Branch, NJ. He served as president of the NJ Postmasters Association. Before moving to New Bern, he resided in Little Silver, NJ, where he raised his family, coached his children’s teams, and was a valued friend and neighbor. In New Bern, he was a participating member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 60 years, Bridie; his daughters, Maureen Welsh (Brien) and Kathleen Flannery; his sons, Robert Callinan (Shelby), and Tim Callinan; his brother, Peter Callinan, of Rohnert Park, CA. He leaves seven grandchildren: Conor and Michael Welsh; Clayton, Taylor, and Mary Bridget Flannery; and Grace and Helen Callinan.

A Funeral Mass for Robert will be held Monday, June 19, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Saint Paul Catholic Church, 3005 Country Club Rd, New Bern, NC 28562. Repass will follow the Funeral Mass.

The family has requested donations to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
