

Gordon was one of the founders of Calvary Baptist Church and served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 57 years. He served as an Usher for many years and taught the Bible in rest homes. He initiated and participated in the jail ministry for a long period of time. He was one of the original members of Township No. 7 Fire Department and one of its first secretaries and chaplains.
Gordon was employed at the Cherry Point Aircraft Repair Facility from 1955 to 1993. During that time, he graduated from the Apprentice School in 1959. He also attended Industrial Engineering & Management Analyst School and served in the fields of aircraft mechanic, crew leader, production control, industrial engineering, and supervision. He also served as Inventory Supervisor, enabling additional engine repairs for war needs; thus, resulting in the Navy declaring Cherry Point to be the Best Aircraft Rework Facility.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Gordon and Roland Gray Coburn; brother, William Lester Coburn; and sisters, Geraldine Miculinic and Judith Cassels.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Durlene, of the home; his three sons, Rodney and wife, Susanne, of New Bern, Mark and wife, Sandra of Raleigh, NC, Jeff and wife, Susan, of Salisbury, NC; 6 grandchildren, Josh, Jeff, Walt, Carol, Devin and Grace Coburn; 4 great grandchildren, Judah Bear & Jett Coburn, and Charlie Grace & Walker Coburn; as well as many other relatives and loved ones.
The family will receive visitors from 12:00-1:00 pm on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Cotten Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm with Rev. John Keeter officiating. Following the service, Roy will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
