Sherry (Johnson) Jones

Sherry Kathryn Johnson Jones, 68, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away on July 28th, 2025. Born in Johnston County, she was the youngest daughter of the late Oliver and Doris Johnson. Sherry graduated from Smithfield‑Selma High School and earned her nursing degree from Johnston Community College, beginning a lifetime devoted to caring for people, animals, and her community.

Her career path took her well beyond nursing. As Executive Director of the Craven County Council on Women, Sherry guided survivors of rape and sexual assault toward safety and justice. She later helped energize New Bern’s cultural scene as Program Coordinator for the Craven Arts Council and raised vital funds for the Humane Society and other no‑kill shelters throughout Craven County.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church of New Bern, Sherry led the children’s choir for many years, often sang in the sanctuary choir, and played piano for countless services. Music followed her everywhere—especially in the car when a Bob Seger song came on the radio. And as perhaps the biggest ACC basketball fan in Craven County, she watched every conference game as if she were courtside, complete with spirited commentary—particularly for the officials.

Sherry is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Daniel Muncy Jones; her son, Tyler McCall Jones, and his wife, Lauren, of Charleston, South Carolina; and her grandchildren, Afton (5) and Addison (3). She is also survived by her sister Gail Parrish (David) of Raleigh and was preceded in death by her sister Carol Corbett of Germantown, Maryland. Sherry’s home—and porch—were never without her “other babies”: DJ, Sunny, Moo, OK, Jasper, Midnight, Baby, Lulu, Pocahontas, and a rotating cast of grateful strays. 

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, 6–8 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern. Memorial services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025 at First Baptist Church, New Bern

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colonial Capital Humane Society.
